A good cleaning is probably an overdue starting point, followed by changing out an old theme for a new one. This could mean simply purchasing kitchen linens, flatware, or cabinet handles. In the bathroom, a new shabby chic shower curtain is a great starting point. All it takes is a little creativity, ingenuity, and willingness to think outside of the norm, and you have the ball rolling on a low cost, highly personalized remodel.

The first curtain is this beautifully framed, shabby chic shower curtain. I love deep brown and fancy border that embellishes its inside. Keep this curtain as is, or if you're crafty try to monogram the middle portion with you initials - do it by hand or have it done professionally.

My second new find is a simple black-and-white shower curtain. There are several previous posts in our blog about how dramatic these curtains can be in your bathroom. These curtains are often so versatile, running from shabby chic to modern. This one has more of a modern, earthy feel to it with it's floral and fauna. I particularly adore that the pictures are simple siloettes.

Next, onto a geometric shower curtain. I like the simplicity of this one along with the thick red border and its originality of pattern. This curtain would POP in any bathroom. It would also make a great wall-hanging, or be creative in other ways.

My final new love is this very fun and original beach shower curtain. Most of these curtains feature boats and surf boards, but this one features our worst enemy of the deep. I also like that this curtain can be ideal for both a kids' bathroom as well as an adults'. This curtain offers a new way of decorating in a style we already like.

Touches to Incorporate for the Shabby Chic Feel:

• 

  Pastel Color Wheel

  Color – pastel, pastel, pastel.  Think of muted Easter colors – light pinks, blues, yellows, and off-whites.  Choose one color for your walls and then use other pastels for accessories.

• Furniture – older, distressed, or antique furniture.  Think of using a small, tall table to neatly place bathroom toiletries, towels, or other items on.  Think about making yours into a vanity of sorts.  I love the smaller half-circle wall tables or tall and skinny square-topped tables.  If your piece isn’t an antique, think about distressing it or even using crackle paint to give it a more longingly loved feel.
• Finer Touches – muted silver or gold or clear glass.  For door handles, towel rods or hooks, and cabinetry pulls, choose touches that are not bright, clean brushed.  As with the furniture, you want to choose something that seems slightly dated.  The door knobs within my home are all the original glass knobs, which fit perfectly with the shabby chic style.  Older furniture pieces are likely to already have the perfect accents on their drawer pulls, but if not, several home improvement stores have pieces that give a convincing effect.  You could also think of hanging a small chandelier in your bathroom.
• Accessories – lace, vintage fabric, and pastels.  Think of incorporating lace into your bathroom’s theme somehow, whether as

  window curtains or doilies on your side table.  Lace can either be a crisp white or slightly tinted (some have even been known to tint their own using tea as a stain).  Use a vintage linens for hand towels or your shower curtain. Finally, try using brighter pastels for vases, soap dishes, or wall art that will pop from the walls.  I particularly like bright blue pieces. 

• Shower Curtain – vintage, lace, or simply patterned.  There are several options for your shower curtain.  Finding a great vintage curtain may be difficult, but finding

   a modern, knock-off can be rather simple.  If color lacks from my bathroom I prefer a nicely patterned floral shower curtain like the one feature here.  Otherwise, to a room of color, choosing an off-white curtain may be just the touch your room needs.

A Shabby Chic bathroom can be quite cozy and welcoming to guests.  It can also be a tranquil place to escape.  If you’re having trouble envisioning your bathroom think of all the finer touches your grandma had in her over-stuffed cozy home, or think of what Martha Stewart might choose.  Good luck with your bathroom makeover!

This week I have the oppurtunity to attend a fun filled weekend on a beautiful island just north of Seattle. Lakeside Family Camp is a time when friends and family gather and relax in the beautiful backdrop of Whidbey Island and camp either in tents or cabin for the ultimate family retreat.  

Today, when my canoe tipped over into Deer Lake I went straight to the shower cabin and took a long hot shower.  This was pleasant except for the shower curtain.  In such a rustic place with the spirit of cottage all around, I can’t help but suggest a shabby chic shower curtain instead of the old mildowey vinyl shower curtain that is already there.

I am sure there are plenty of other things to spend money on in a property that gets used as much as this one, but with the price I paid to come here, I believe the details will keep me coming back.  A unique shower curtain would certainly have helped me calm down after nearly drowning. . . well, maybe.

I am looking forward to the rest of the festivities here at Family camp, and I can’t help but wonder how it would be improved with some inexpensive cosmetic upgrades.
