Who knew my dreams could infiltrate more of my life by having a horse shower curtain? I definitely didn’t. That’s why I’m here; to pass on the wisdom so more little girls and boys can dream about their lives side-by-side with their very own horse. Any awesome parent would want their kid to be happy. Right?

In the heart of true cowboy decor you will find horses, boots and some funky yet neutral colors and designs.  The Southwestern decor is known for geomtric patterns that are reminiscent of the tribes and colonies it once reflected.  Also, colors inspired by nature and sunsets find their way on to balnkets, curtains and household tapestries.

With these elements you can upgrade your western decor with out having to create an eyesore, or a tacky themed bathroom.  Now just add some spice to your hot shower with a western shower curtain!

I’m not very old, but I do have several fond memories of staying up late in the evening past my bed time watching Mr. Ed reruns with my father.  It was one of those shows that my brother didn’t find humorous and my mother had better things to do than watch a show about a horse, even if it was “the famous Mr. Ed.”  But, for me and my dad, it was bonding.  One of those rare times where we would be drawn together in the same room under the same desire.  I don’t remember much of any of the episodes I saw, but I do remember the show’s opening jingle and singing it with my father every time it came on.  I miss TV shows like this, I miss the innosense of there being a show a young child could watch with their father that doesn’t expose them to fast-paced action shots, foul language, or violence.  I miss that time with my dad.

As I was browsing the blankets, I thought that a southwestern shower curtain with the same patterns would complete a southwestern themed bathroom, and could serve as the focal point.

If you’re like me, this is your worst nightmare and most annoying experience in the shower.  Rather than your shower experience being a relief from your day, it’s one more stressor you deal with.  Below are several tips to help you lessen the likelihood of the shower curtain smother.

• Open a window to give your bathroom’s hot air a place to escape.
• Slow down the water flow from your shower head.
• Switch on the bathroom ceiling fan.
• Cut back on your hot water usage.
• Purchase a curtain with weights or magnets at the bottom to weigh the curtain down.

• Drab Color Scheme: Every area and store has a different avalability of southwestern shower curtains.  You want to choose one that has brighter colors and is vivid.  While southwestern creates the image of the early West, try to avoid a curtain that appears to actually be from the time period.
• Animal Print: Cows are definitely southwestern, but a cow-print curtain is not southwestern.  Stay away from trying to bring the open range home with an animal print shower curtain.
• Lack of Appealing Accessories:  As previously discussed, choose accessories that are accents of the southwestern time period, such as clay pots.  Stay away from all things tacky, like glass Indian figurines that hold your toothbrush.
• Incomplete Theme: Simply purchasing a southwestern shower curtain is not enough.  If you’re unable to fully invest in the theme (i.e. wall color or accessories), as discussed in our previous post, you should avoid purchasing a shower curtain like this.  Instead of bringing the southwest to your home, you will be bringing a bold, uncoordinating curtain to your bathroom.

We hope that a southwestern shower curtain is for you, but we know it may not be for everyone.  If one of above points seemed to ping you, walking away from that southwestern curtain that has your eye, may be the best thing for you and your bathroom.

The key to pulling off this style is to keep it simple and authentic, not store bought.  With this style, less is more.  So, if you already have your bathroom decorated from floor to celiing with everything Southwestern, you may want to consider editing some items.  

The Southwestern Style can be incorporated with major elements: Color & Texture.

     Color

Let the natural palette of the desert inspire you for the walls, ceiling, and floor.  Traditional Southwestern colors include cactus green, yellow, terra cotta red and turquoise.  Keep it light, calm and airy, resembling an old rustic cottage in the Southwest.  For a contrast you could accent with turqouise towels, or a burnt orange bath rug.  

Here, the monochromatic color scheme makes for a tranquil getaway.

      Texture

In the above picture, a burlap sack was used for a curtain.  More creative ways to add a bit of texture are: a southwestern shower curtain, or fabric shower curtain, towels, or a bag rug.  In the southwestern style, prints are used, but don’t go overboard.  Pick one element, such a printed shower curtain, for your pattern, and then go with solid towels, or vice versa.  Here are some patterns for your inspiration.

Lastly, don’t forget about accessories.  I am not talking about a matching horse shower curtain, horse toothbrush holder and horse soap dish.  Think about green plants, clay pots, and old black and white photos of the west; these make an old tackey southwestern bathroom into an authentic stylish hacienda.  

Accessories:

Choosing the right accessories, such as light fixtures, sink and tub fixtures, and even door knobs can be the key to making your rustic bathroom well-rounded.  To begin, choose sink and tub fixtures that appear to be from the not-so-recent past, like the kind that are white and read “HOT” and “COLD” on them.  Next, choose great lighting options.  Going with wall sconces rather than bright, flourescent Hollywood bulbs are great starters.  If you have an overhead light, think about getting a small but eye-catching chandelier made of a darker metal, wood, or even antlers.  All other fixtures in the room – door handles, drawer pulls, cabinet handles, etc. – should all appear dated.  To do this, stay away from shiny silver and gold if at all possible.

Final Touches:

You can also choose metal toothbrush and soap holders.  Here, though, could be your opportunity to have a little fun, as there are several rustic-themed pieces that depict bears, moose, ducks, and deer.  These are also great choices for the rustic bathroom.  Buying crisp, white towels and candles can also add an extra touch to the rustic bathroom.  You can even find candles wrapped in tree bark to finalize the rustic theme.

Of course one cannot forget about finding the perfect shower curtain for your bathroom.  If you’re not into a rustic shower curtain featuring bears and moose, you can often find southwestern shower curtains that also fit perfectly into a bathroom like this.  Then, don’t forget to add the finishing touch with your bear shower curtain hooks.
