According to a recent Money Watch article, Target stores should be avoided when shopping for shower curtains.  So with the Christmas shopping season in full swing, be aware of this newly found advice when shopping for a holiday shower curtain.

Every time you clean your body, calcium and hard water builds on your shower head making your body “clean”. It’s a good thing it’s the easiest process in the world!

1. Remove your shower head from the pipe sticking out of the wall.
2. Fill a bowl with vinegar/water.
3. Plop that bad boy (the shower head) in the vinegar mixture.
And that’s it..well, almost. Let it soak overnight, and put it back when you are finished.

You know, while you are at it, why not clean all the soap scum and mildew off of your shower curtain too. Vinyl shower curtains and fabric shower curtains do great in the washer on the delicate setting in cold water.

So much for ‘Spring’ cleaning…it’s November!

So what though, right?  The title of my blog is kind of stupid but in our store, we’ve been dealing with the issue of which of the two we want to focus our marketing efforts towards.  Both have avid followers and both have strong potentials for room themes adn decorations.  Growing up, I had a huge beach decoration going in my room, with full wall murals and all; however, our accountant loves cat s and her house is filled to the hilt w/ all things cat.

So now I’m calling for a pole:  of the two unique categories, which would you prefer:  Cat Shower Curtains or Beach Shower Curtains and furthermore, would you prefer a vinyl shower curtain or a fabric shower curtain?

Hang a shower curtain that defines your style.

Whether it’s a sophisticated fabric shower curtain, or a simple vinyl liner with a few designs, both can convey a message to your guests.

This week I have the oppurtunity to attend a fun filled weekend on a beautiful island just north of Seattle. Lakeside Family Camp is a time when friends and family gather and relax in the beautiful backdrop of Whidbey Island and camp either in tents or cabin for the ultimate family retreat.  

Today, when my canoe tipped over into Deer Lake I went straight to the shower cabin and took a long hot shower.  This was pleasant except for the shower curtain.  In such a rustic place with the spirit of cottage all around, I can’t help but suggest a shabby chic shower curtain instead of the old mildowey vinyl shower curtain that is already there.

I am sure there are plenty of other things to spend money on in a property that gets used as much as this one, but with the price I paid to come here, I believe the details will keep me coming back.  A unique shower curtain would certainly have helped me calm down after nearly drowning. . . well, maybe.

I am looking forward to the rest of the festivities here at Family camp, and I can’t help but wonder how it would be improved with some inexpensive cosmetic upgrades.

• Open a window to give your bathroom’s hot air a place to escape.
• Slow down the water flow from your shower head.
• Switch on the bathroom ceiling fan.
• Cut back on your hot water usage.
• Purchase a curtain with weights or magnets at the bottom to weigh the curtain down.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post about ‘how not to clean‘ your plastic shower curtain becuase I ruined mine and wanted to spare our readers from making the same mistake I did.  This week, I am sharing some ideas on what to do with that ruined shower curtain or others you may have lying around.

Also, I saw this upcycled tarp into a dress.  This would be cool with a vinyl shower curtain as well.

Another idea is to find old waste products that you could upcycle into a shower curtain.  For example, I found a Caution Tape shower curtain on Etsy.

Just as long as you have enough material and it is plastic, you could make very unique shower curtains with just about anything!

The sky is the limit!

My husband and I are friends with another couple who have done the beach bathroom right.  They started off with a simple bathroom that if not given some TLC could have looked dated – older shower/tub combo, sink and vanity, and even half-tiled walls.  They made the best of what they were given.  As is often the case, they started with a their curtain to establish the bathroom’s theme: a beach shower curtain.  Beach shower curtains can be simplistic with an ocean scene and palm trees, or lively and fun, with surf boards and bikinis.  And, as always, you can have your choice between a vinyl shower curtain or fabric shower curtain. . . whichever you prefer.

After establishing their beach theme, our friends used their bathroom accessories to their advantage.  A whicker basket has been made into their trash can and a small, color-coordinating kid’s play locker is a great hideaway for extra rolls of toilet paper.  Palm trees and the classic beach surfing car (the kind that resemble today’s PT Cruisers with the wood on the side) make up their toothbrush holder and soap dispenser.  They even have fun window curtains and bath mats to complete their theme.

All around, this is a fun bathroom.  In past posts we have suggested staying away from themed accessories like the palm tree toothbrush holders, but in this bathroom it works.  What makes it work in one bathroom but not another?  Personality!  This bathroom aptly fits our friends’ personalities.  Also, they are avid beach goers, visiting beaches (often Hawaii’s) several times a year.  Their beach bathroom is a way of remembering their trips, alone time together, and bringing the sand back with them.  Theirs is a bathroom done right!  So, become a beach bum and join the fun in the sun!

Next time you find yourself scrounging for some reading material for a long bathroom visit, look no further than your very own shower curtain.  With an open mind and a little time, these novelty shower curtains will complete your bathroom’s decor and function.
